A Message to the CIS Community:
You are on the right path…Someone has been here...You are not alone.
As you enter the CIS campus through our wide and welcoming gates, the first thing you will notice is a giant stone sculpture – rocks balancing on another - resembling a human form.
This is known as an Inuksuk. it is a symbol of the Inuits, the first people to inhabit the northern part of Canada. The word ‘Inukshuk’ is derived from its shape, and means “like a human being.”
Originally, Inukshuks were built by the Inuit people to provide direction across the land of the north for hunting and navigation. Each stone, balanced on another and built by many, had a purpose pointing to different directions: the best fishing spot, navigation or location for a celebration. Each coded message comforted and connected them, and allowed them to remember that there was more that lay ahead of them.
While the Inuit embrace modern lifestyles today, they have passed on the fine skill of building Inuksuks from generation to generation, ensuring that it remains a prominent icon of Inuit heritage and Canadian pride. The Canadian territory of Nunavut has one emblazoned on its flag. The Canadian embassy in Washington, DC boasts a large inukshuk statue, as does Pearson International Airport in Toronto. In 2010, it was used as inspiration for the official logo of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
These days, Inukshuk serve many other purposes. But perhaps more than anything, they send a brilliant message out to the next traveler, that they aren’t alone, that someone had previously stood where they stood and experienced what they did.
At CIS, our Inukshuk represents the very same message. It also stands for communication, friendship, teamwork and strength, as we welcome one and all from the world with open arms in our shared vision: Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow.
In the future, as you enter the beautiful, purpose-built CIS campus, take a look on your left and remember as you set your eyes on our Inukshuk: “You are on the right path. Someone has been here. You are not alone.”
If you have not been to our beautiful campus, drop in and we’ll love to tell you a bit more about how we built the Inukshuk. You will also get a chance to see the other prominent symbols around the campus, like the canoe in our lobby. The CIS campus isn’t just a purpose-built collection of buildings dedicated to teaching and learning. It’s a magnificent history lesson in itself, a place of artistic exploration and an open-air museum of culture. To visit, simply contact our friendly Admissions team and let us show you how we build a truly caring community at CIS. #WeAreCIS
