On the weekend of March 25-26, 2023, BASIS InternationalSchool Park Lane Harbour hosted a BIBS·CSpeech & Debate Tournament, welcoming students from across the network. Asthe fifth tournament of the year and the season’s first in-person, synchronousevent, it signified a major milestone for participants. With the country’sreturn to normalcy and eased travel restrictions for schools, this event representeda triumph of spirit as students from all our campuses in Chengdu, Guangzhou,Hangzhou, Huizhou, Nanjing, and Shenzhen gathered together.

2023年3月25日至26日，华润小径湾贝赛思国际学校主办了新一轮的中国 · 贝赛思国际/双语学校演讲与辩论联赛，来自中国贝赛思各个学校的参赛学生们欢聚小径湾，共襄盛事。作为本年度第五轮比赛以及本赛季的首次线下比赛，本轮联赛对所有参赛选手来说都意义非凡。随着旅行限制的解除，生活归于常态，来自成都、广州、杭州、惠州、南京、深圳的贝赛思学校的学生们得以齐聚一堂，充分体现了勇往直前的竞赛精神。

The weekend began with a few challenges as weather issues groundedflights for the Chengdu and Hangzhou teams, causing delays in their travel toGuangdong. Fortunately, the tournament organizers were able to postpone theevent’s start time to allow these students to arrive and compete.

受周末恶劣天气导致的航班停运，让成都和杭州贝赛思的学生们不能如期到达广东。幸而，此次比赛的组织者及时调整比赛计划，推迟比赛开始时间，让所有参赛学生都能同步参赛。

Jennifer Gunter, Vice Head of High School and sponsor of the Speech & Debate Team at Chengdu, shared pictures from the airport and reported Friday, “It was a long day, but the kids are in good spirits!”

成都校区高中部副主任兼演讲与辩论联赛教练Jennifer Gunter在周五候机时分享了学生们在机场的照片，并感叹道：“这将是非常忙碌的一天，但孩子们都兴奋不已！”

Hangzhou Head Coach Nicholas Burr shared that when he explained the situation to Tournament Host Mark Wilkerson and Tournament Director Colin Malinak, they didn't hesitate to accommodate us. “The entire team at Park Lane Harbor went above and beyond to ensure Hangzhou’s participation,” he said. “It was a difficult call and a big sacrifice, but we were supported and encouraged by our wonderful hosts, tournament staff, and fellow competitors at every step. They embody the values of inclusion, fair competition, and hospitality that make our speech & debate community so special.”

杭州钱江贝赛思国际学校演讲与辩论总教练Nicholas Burr 表示，在了解到他们航班延误的情况后，主办学校赛事负责人Mark Wilkerson与联赛主任Colin Malinak毫不犹豫地采用了应急方案，“华润小径湾贝赛思国际学校的整个会务团队竭尽全力，从各个环节上悉心安排，确保了杭州贝赛思的顺利参赛。这是极具挑战性并且会带来一定损失的决定，但是主办学校，赛事组织人员和其他参赛选手让我们在每一个环节都感受到了支持与鼓励。他们所表达的包容、公平、热情，让这次演讲与辩论联赛显得尤为特别。”

The flexibility and professionalism of the Operations teams at the impacted schools and Park Lane Harbour were impressive and greatly appreciated.

On Saturday morning, students from Hangzhou rushed directly to their competition rounds from the airport, and the tournament officially began. With over 250 students and more than 60 teachers and administrators from every campus participating, the event featured six competitive categories: Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Interpretation, Original Oratory, and two divisions of Public Forum Debate (novice and varsity). As the weekend unfolded, the judges narrowed down the competitors to the top six students in each Speech category and the top two teams in Debate. Congratulations to all students who bravely stood up to speak!

周六上午，在杭州钱江贝赛思国际学校的学生从机场直接赶到会场后，此次联赛正式拉开序幕。此次比赛共设六个比赛单元：即兴演讲、随性演讲、主题演讲、原创演讲和公共论坛式辩论（初级组与校队组），来自七所中国贝赛思学校共计250名参赛学生和60多名教师及管理人员共同参与。通过激烈的角逐及评委的票选，每个类别的演讲比赛单元将产生前6强选手，辩论单元比赛产生前两名的优秀辩论队伍。祝贺所有参赛选手的精彩表现！

The event was attended by Chief Executive Head of Schools Dr. Mark Reford, who shared, “The BIBS·C Speech & Debate Tournament held at Park Lane Harbour was a triumph. Seeing hundreds of our students and numerous teachers engaged in this splendid enterprise was inspiring. A particular delight was observing students catching up on homework in their free moments—a testament to the intensity of the BASIS China student experience. It truly warmed my heart.”

While every successful performance has intrinsic value, the BIBS·C Speech & Debate Tournament is, first and foremost, a competition. The weekend was filled with highlights, but certain statistics speak to its success: each participating school had multiple entries advance to elimination rounds, individual championships were won by students from five different campuses, and Chengdu saw its first tournament finalist within a year of operation, despite not having a dedicated speech & debate coach.

尽管每一场精彩表演都有其内在价值，但归根到底，在比赛中的一较高下仍然是中国 · 贝赛思国际/双语学校演讲与辩论联赛的核心所在。整个周末的比赛精彩纷呈，但最后的数据总能告诉我们最为亮眼之处：每所学校均在多项比赛单元淘汰赛中晋级；单项冠军分别来自五个不同校区的学生；成都校区在缺少专职演讲与辩论教练的情况下，在首年参加比赛就诞生了一个决赛选手。

This event marked the final “regular season” tournament of the year. Students have been working since September to qualify for the BIBS·C Network Championship, which BASIS International School Nanjing will host in June. Kiana Huang, team captain for BASIS International School Shenzhen, is organizing a final online tournament on May 6-7, 2023, to provide one last opportunity for qualification. Once the list of qualifiers for the BIBS·C Network Championship is ready, it will be published.

此次联赛为本学年的最后一场校际“常规赛”。接下来，南京贝赛思国际学校将在6月份举办BIBS·C演讲与辩论冠军锦标赛。从去年9月份开始，学生们就在为此次冠军锦标赛做积极准备。深圳贝赛思国际学校的演讲与辩论队长Kiana Huang同学正在积极筹备5月6日至7日的最后一场线上校际联赛，这将会是争取南京锦标赛参赛资格的最后一次机会。我们会在稍后公布最终晋级冠军锦标赛的参赛名单。

Colin Malinak, BASIS International & Bilingual Schools·China Director of Speech & Debate, asserts that “there is no more powerful activity for young students than speech and debate. It teaches them to research, write, and speak, but more importantly, it challenges them to better understand the world around them and empowers them to use their voice.”

A group of talented young speakers from BIGZ middle and high school participated in the first in-person BASIS China network speech and debate competition where seven BASIS China schools came together, earning several impressive accolades. The competition, which took place on March 25 and 26 at BIPH featured a range of events including public forum debates, impromptu speaking, interpretation, original oratory, and extemporaneous speaking.

3月25日至26日，华润小径湾贝赛思国际学校主办了本赛季首次线下中国 · 贝赛思国际/双语学校演讲与辩论联赛。中国贝赛思七个校区的参赛选手齐聚一堂，在公共论坛式辩论、随性演讲、主题演讲、原创演讲、即兴演讲等环节展开激烈角逐。来自广州贝赛思国际学校的选手们一路过关斩将，载誉归来。

The group was chaperoned by Mr. Cody Jackson, Mr. Phil Dust, Ms. Yvette Zhang, Ms.Bella Wang, and Dr. Jin Lanz, who provided support and guidance throughout thecompetition.

In June, Mr. Jackson is taking the best debate students BASIS Guangzhou has to offer to Nanjing for the BASIS Network championship. Next year, BASIS Guangzhou will attend several more in-person events all over China, plus some in the US! The next few years will be very exciting for speech and debate at BIGZ!

六月，Mr. Jackson将带领广州贝赛思国际学校的杰出辩手前往南京贝赛思国际学校参加BIBS·C演讲与辩论冠军锦标赛。明年，我们的学生也将前往全国各地甚至美国参加更多线下竞赛。我们期待孩子们继续在辩论场上大放异彩。
